Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs down to the National Hockey League and its players association for not addressing the issue of hits to the head sooner or with more urgency. After years of watching players sustain concussion after concussion due to shots to the head, the competition committee is just now considering a discussion on the issue of head-checking. This is a serious issue that needed to be addressed years ago.

Thumbs up to the co-op education program which sees high school students work on a part-time basis with local companies. And a big thumbs up to Bugle-Observer co-op student Lisa Keough. The Hartland Community School Grade 12 student, who plans to pursue a journalism career, has been a tremendous asset to our newsroom. In addition to writing a regular column, Instant Message, Lisa has covered several stories for the paper and regularly ambushes people on the street for our Street Talk section. Congratulations and thank you, Lisa.

Thumbs up to dedicated fans of the soon-to-be-blockbuster film Twilight. The gothic romance, which has been a hit on the bookshelves for what seems forever, had its grand opening on the big-screen on Nov. 21, much to the delight of the millions of teen girls who have fallen in love with the characters which abide the popular tome. The only downside, for me at least, is that every time the cast is interviewed on television, especially in front of a live audience, their voices are drowned out by piercing screams of delight.

Thumbs down to celebrities voicing their opinions on the recent United States election results. Yes, I know celebrities are people too and I'm not saying they shouldn't have a vote, but just because they may (or may not) have some sway with the public doesn't mean they need to rant and rave in hopes of gaining more support for their party of choice. The election is done, in my opinion America made the right decision, and now celebrities need to go back to their day jobs.

Thumbs down to the executives of the "Big Three" auto companies in the U.S. Appearing before Congress this week, they've all made cases for getting another huge chunk of taxpayer money to bail them out during these tough economic times. But how did they get to the hearings? Why, on their gas-guzzling private jets, of course. Knock off the hypocrisy, fly commercial, and stop wasting Joe the Plumber's money.

Thumbs down to motorists who can't park their vehicles in parking lots. Seriously, how hard is it to put your car between two lines, wide enough to park a cube van in. It is sad to drive into a busy lot and see a Chevy Cobalt taking up two spaces or find a vehicle parked outside the lines, blocking the traffic flow. If you can't park, you'd better take driver's education.
