Thumbs up/Thumbs down

Thumbs up to those who give of their time freely. I am always impressed in this day and age of busy lifestyles when someone does not hesitate to lend their time to someone in need of a hand. Time seems to be a precious commodity these days, but there is no shortage of people willing to drop their plans for someone else.

Thumbs up to the Greater Woodstock Chamber of Commerce, the Florenceville Kin Club and all the volunteers who put together great Santa Claus parades in the respective communities. I must add one not of caution, however, to parade planners in Woodstock. If future years make sure west-bound traffic is rerouted away from Main Street at the downtown bridge. Tragedy was averted only only by an alert driver who was able to stop when children ran in front of her to pick up candy.

Thumbs up to the volunteers, participants, and organizers of the annual Florenceville Kin Club Santa Claus parade, who braved cold weather, and an early winter snowfall, to bring a bit of merriment to citizens of Florenceville-Bristol on Saturday. The event marked the first time I have ever covered a holiday parade in the Western Valley. I was touched by the hard work, and dedication, many of those on hand showed in making red-and-white dreams come true. It may have been cold, but the smiling faces I encountered that evening made me as warm as Christmas morning.

Thumbs down to Montreal Canadiens fans for showing blind loyalty to the Habs when it comes to selecting this year's Eastern Conference All-Star starting lineup. As of Wednesday morning, all six starting spots were held by Les Habitants. To put it in perspective, Montreal's Mike Komisarek, a third line defenseman at best, has twice as many votes as Boston's Zdeno Chara, one of the top blueliners in the NHL. I realize the game is in Montreal this season, and it's the Canadiens' 100th anniversary, but let's be serious. NHL fans in other cities need to work to stop this madness.

Thumbs down to the ‘surprise' of the early snowstorm that happened last weekend and that we're still seeing the remnants of to this day. It made for slick driving and terrible highway conditions. Christmas I want to come early, the snow...not so much.
