Every year, New Brunswickers have a chance to recognize individuals and organizations for their contributions to community and to others by submitting their names for a Family and Community Volunteer Award.

"This is your opportunity to recognize a volunteer, someone in your community, or someone who may have affected your life or the lives of people around you," said Brian Kenny, minister responsible for the Community Non-profit Organizations Secretariat.

The awards were established eight years ago in recognition of the United Nations General Assembly's proclamation of the International Year of Volunteers.

This year, the secretariat is hosting the awards with deadline for nominations set at Feb. 6.

The award winners will be announced during National Volunteer Week April 19-25, with $1,000 going to the non-profit charity of the winners' choice.

There are four categories open for nominations: youth, adult, senior and organization.

The province released Delivering on the Blueprint in March, which it expressed commitment to building a stronger non-profit sector with the awards, that are meant as a show of respect and recognition for volunteers.

* Nomination forms and additional information can be obtained by visiting the Community Non-Profit Organizations Secretariat on the provincial government Web site or by calling 1-888-295-4545.
