FREDERICTON - The province has launched a new pamphlet aimed at helping people with complaints about police or policing services.

Called Resolving Complaints about Police in New Brunswick, the pamphlet answers several questions about how the process works and was released by the New Brunswick Police Commission in partnership with Public Legal Education and Information Services of New Brunswick.

"It is important that people give feedback to improve the service the police provide to our communities," said Peter Seheult, chairman of the New Brunswick Police Commission. "This pamphlet will explain the role of the commission in resolving and addressing concerns. Complaints may relate to service or policy matters as well as conduct of regional municipal police officers. We can also assist residents in directing complaints against the RCMP," he said.

The pamphlet answers questions about the type of complaints that can be filed, how long after the incident, what happens after the complaint is sent and what happens if the complainant is not satisfied with the way the complaint is handled.

* The pamphlets can be obtained by contacting the Public Legal Education and Information Services of New Brunswick by e-mail at pleisnb@web.ca, by telephone at 506-453-5369 or by writing to PLEIS-NB, P.O. Box 6000, Fredericton, N.B., E3B 5H1. They are also available online at www.legal-info-legale.nb.ca, at local police departments and Service New Brunswick offices.
