Students, Wildcats support turkey drive

Great Bessborough Turkey Curl to take place at Sunday's game
When Bessborough School students find a cause they want to support, they're serious about it.
The school will partner this weekend on a second event with the Moncton Wildcats to support the annual Sue Stultz turkey drive, which collects turkeys for families who won't have a Christmas dinner without the drive's help.
This year, the drive is aiming for 3,384 turkeys, and Bessborough students are doing their part to ensure Stultz meets her goal.
This weekend, the school's Bessborough Leadership Corps will host the "Great Bessborough Turkey Curl" during the intermission between periods two and three of the Wildcats game against the Rimouski Oceanic.
The event will see local celebrities, including MP Brian Murphy, Bessborough principal Sally Somers and superintendent of schools Karen Branscombe, try to curl a 14-lb. (6.4-kg) frozen turkey down to centre ice from the Moncton Coliseum's zamboni entrance.
Following what should be an amusing event, Metro hockey fans will get their own opportunity to sweep the turkey down the ice.
Bessborough students will be on hand to sell tickets, $1 for one, $2 for three and $5 for an arm's length, that will give game-goers the opportunity to win big.
Six random numbers will be selected, and the winning ticket holders will get the opportunity to sweep the frozen bird down the ice. Whoever makes it closest to centre ice will win a $100 gift card from Sobeys. All of the money raised in the fundraiser will go to purchasing frozen turkeys for Stultz's drive.
This is the second event Bessborough and the Wildcats have teamed up on recently in support of the drive. They raised roughly $900 recently at a charity bear drive where donated teddy bears were purchased by folks at the Nov. 28 Wildcats game. Those who purchased the bears were able to toss them onto the ice.
Bessborough teacher Nick Mattatall, who co-ordinated the two events with fellow teacher Marcia Leger, says the Bessborough Leadership Corps is always looking for events to fundraise for, and the Stultz's well-known turkey drive is one they all love.
Mattatall is looking forward to Sunday's game.
"It should be an entertaining event," he says. "I've never seen a frozen turkey slide on ice."
