New program offers after school care for the village's elementary students

Millville Youth and Recreation Centre Inc. is pleased to announce the arrival of a new program for children in the village and surrounding areas. Beyond the Bell, which opened last month, is off to a great start.
The local youth centre hosts the after-school program for children in kindergartern through Grade 5.
When the arrive at the Beyond the Bell program, children are offered a snack. From their arrival until parents come between to pick them up before 6 p.m., the children are offered assistance with homework, supplies for making crafts, an area for free play and a quiet corner for reading. Throughout the year, members of the community will be offering various enrichment programs. Currently, children have the opportunity to learn sewing from a local seamstress.
Currently two workers – Ruby Jean Brewer and Andrea Bell – oversee activities at Beyond the Bell.
Adults, as well as the children, enjoy being part of this community initiative. As noted in the mission statement of the program, "community involvement will be strongly encouraged to foster a sense of connectedness and belonging."
The community is demonstrating part of that connection by fundraising for the program. On Dec. 13, the Millville Legion will host a Christmas Family Dance. Organizers point out the special Christmas event is open to everyone.
The Beyond the Bell program is not yet at full capacity, but spaces are limited. Parents have the option of sending their child each day between Monday and Thursday after school, or on their choice of days.
For more information, parents can call one of the MYRCI board members or the youth centre between 1 and 6 p.m.
