The 2008-09 home openers for a pair of the region's top NBIAA b-ball teams turned into a duet of tough losses on Tuesday night.
Varsity squads from Carleton North High School played in back-to-back home contests against teams from Leo Hayes High School of Fredericton on Nov. 19 in Florenceville-Bristol, losing hard-fought decisions in both games to the visitors.
In Western Conference AAA boys play, the Carleton North High School Northern Carleton Pharmacy Stars were dropped 86-46 by the LHHS Lions, while in Western Conference AAA girls action the CNHS Smith Drugs Stars trailed by three (34-31) at the half in an eventual 60-56 loss to LHHS.
Katie McTavish led the charge for the victors in the girls game with 17.
For CNHS, Tamara Tompkins had the hot hand with 23, while Lauren Antworth had 16 and Riley McIntosh 10.
In CNHS' loss to Leo Hayes in varsity boys play, the Lions used its team speed, and a tenacious defence, to stymie the Stars for a well-deserved 40-point triumph.
LHHS shot 52 per cent from the floor and had six three-pointers. Halftime score was 46-27 LHHS. Richie Wilkins led the charge for the winners with 26. Wade Lawrence was tops for CNHS with 19, while Andrew McInnis had 10.
The Stars were also scheduled to play Monday, Nov. 24 against Oromocto, but results were not available at press time.
Both CNHS teams will be back at home on Tuesday, Nov. 25 in a pair of exhibition games against Presque Isle.
The girls game takes the court at 6 p.m., while the boys play at 8 p.m.
