Junior Panthers split weekend hockey games

The Western Valley Panthers of the N.B. Junior Hockey League split a pair of contests on the Nov. 14 weekend.

The Western Valley Junior Panthers split a pair of league games on the Nov. 15 weekend.

Its tally included a well-deserved 6-2 win over Grand Lake in Chipman on Friday, Nov. 14 and a hard-fought, but fast-paced, 6-3 home loss to Memramcook-Dieppe on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre in Florenceville-Bristol.

In the win over Grand Lake, Jason Phippen, from Justin Scott and A. J. McAllister, opened the scoring for the Panthers at the three minute mark of the first.

Tyler Smart, from Brendon Brown and Jake Mattinson, notched WV's second at 12:25 of the opening stanza.

In the second, Phippen notched his second of the match at 3:32 from Mattinson, which was followed by the Panthers' fourth counter of the middle from at 14:08 by Justin Canam from the stick of Max Lebreau and Sean McLeod.

In the third, Brown notched his team's fifth goal at 4:28 on feeds from Smart and Justin Scott.

McLeod rounded out the scoring for the victors at 6:19 of the final frame, with help from Brown and Smart.

In Saturday's game, WV played a strong match but the visitors made the most of their chances to double its rivals.

WV scored twice in the first, with Smart opening the scoring for the homeowners with his counter at 11:28 from Brown and McLeod.

Brown notched the Panthers' second goal at 17:19 of the opening stanza, with helpers to Smart and Canam.

Canam rounded out the scoring for WV at 2:04 of the third on helpers from Brendon Wheelan and Benson Thompson.

The Panthers will be back in action this Saturday at the NCCC in a 7 p.m. contest against Blacks Harbour.

"They are a new entry to the league this year and are reported to have a very good, fast team," said the team's coaching staff in a recent release.

"We invite everyone to come out to watch. We hope to have a big crowd out this coming weekend."

The Panthers play the majority of its home games at the NCCC.
