
Slammers split weekend home starts in MJAHL play

Woodstock drops Timberwolves, lose to Western Capitals in back-to-back contests at CCC

It was yet another .500 weekend for the Woodstock Slammers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League.
The troops of Jason Tatarnic split back-to-back home starts on Friday and Saturday to move to 12-9-1-5 on its 2008-09 season, good for fourth place in the loop's Meek Division.
On Saturday at the Carleton Civic Centre, the hometowners were hoping for a big win over longtime rivals the Summerside Western Capitals, but lost a tough 6-4 decision.
On Friday, the Slammers started the two-game home swing with a come-from-behind 6-4 win over the Miramichi Timberwolves in front of 686 paid.
In the loss to Summerside, the Slammers had led by two goals midway in the third before the Caps rallied for four unanswered goals to take the two points.
Mike MacIsaac led the Western Capitals with one goal and two assists.
Spencer Corcoran, on the power play, scored at 3:00 to give the Western Capitals a 1-0 lead after the first.
Bruno Gosselin's marker, on the power play from Mitch Flynn and Chad Young, at 2:05 of the second tied the game 1-1, which was followed by John Chayka's man advantage counter, notched at 8:19 from Flynn, to give the Slammers a 2-1 lead.
MacIsaac's power play goal at 19:16 knotted the game at 2-2 after the second period, but Brad Jackson, from Chad Young and Brogan Bailey, scored at 6:15 to regain the Woodstock lead at 3-2.
Patrick Ryder, from Tyler Gale and Shane Innes, then scored 1:26 later at 7:41 to extend the lead to 4-2, but Summerside came roaring back, scoring three of their own in a span of 69 seconds to take a 5-4 lead.
Steven Brazil had his counter at 9:06, while Josh Currie scored 47 seconds later at 9:53 to tie it.
Will Johnston's winner came 24 seconds after that at 10:17.
Nathan Snowie, in an empty net, scored the insurance marker at 19:58 to seal the victory for the Caps in front of 669 paid.
Summerside went 2 for 5 on the power play while Woodstock went 2 for 8.
Alex Dupuis stopped 31 of 35 shots for the win while Curtis Black turned aside 38 of 43 shots in the loss.
In the win over the ‘Wolves, Young led the Slammers with three goals and one assist, including the insurance markers with 17 seconds to go, while Todd Cusack added two goals.
Woodstock trailed 2-0 after one. but made it 3-3 after 40 minutes on Young's second of the game, which was unassisted at 19:54 of the stanza, before notching a trio in the final frame.
Dylan Bellmore opened the scoring at 1:24 to give the Timberwolves an early 1-0 lead.
Kyle MacDonald then scored at 6:53 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the first period.
Undaunted, the Slammers got back into the game at 9:20 of the second on Cusack's first of the game, from Adam Donovan, to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
John Morea's power play marker at 14:53 increased the lead to 3-1, but Young's first, notched on the power play from Chayka at 16:32, got the Slammers back to within a goal.
In the third, Cusack's second of the game, on a feed from Brad Jackson and on the power play, at 3:08 made the score 4-3.
Bobby Christie, from Jonathan Tower and Young, then scored 45 seconds later at 3:53 to give Woodstock the lead at 5-3.
Justin Barbour's power play marker at 9:40 made the game a one-goal contest yet again, but the Slammers held their own for the rest of the way.
Woodstock went 2 for 6 on the power play while Miramichi went 3 for 9. Black stopped 30 of 34 shots for the win while Brad Dyke turned aside 30 of 35 shots in the loss.
The Slammers will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 7 in a return match against Miramichi on the road, starting at 3 p.m.
