WHS nips FHS in basketball action
The Woodstock High School AAA Thunder varsity boys basketball team opened its 2008-09 Western Conference schedule on the road against Fredericton High on Thursday evening, returning home with a well-deserved 61-59 triumph.
Woodstock jumped to an early first quarter lead and survived a strong FHS comeback attempt to take the victory.
Joel Everett led the winners with 17, while Jordan Irvine had 16 and Will Thornton 15.
Next league game for the Thunder will be a 7 p.m. home start tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 2) against longtime rivals Carleton North High School.
Woodstock plays the majority of its home games during the week, with tournament play on weekends.
Session in Brighton Dec. 4 on rec plan
A public presentation for citizens of the Local Service District of Brighton to discuss the status and planning for a new regional recreational facility for the Central Carleton area will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Triple C Rec Hall on Rockland Road.
The gathering will the latest information on a regional committee's plans for the proposed Central Carleton Rec Plex, a multi-million dollar facility which is in the development stages.
The facility, if it goes ahead, will be built on the same grounds to replace the existing Hartland Community Arena, which has served the region for four decades.
"We are urging all residents of Brighton to come out and take a look at the current proposal to offer any feedback they can," said a recent release from the event's organizers.
"All interested local residents are invited to attend."
Bantam AAA Panthers split road games
A recent road trip to the North Shore netted the Western Valley Panthers two of a possible four points in N.B. AAA Bantam Hockey League play.
Following a 8-3 victory over the Acadian Peninsula Senateurs in Tracadie-Sheila on Saturday, Nov. 22, the Panthers dropped a 7-2 decision to the Chaleur Lightning on Sunday, Nov. 23 to sit at 4-5-1 following six weeks of play on the 2008-09 season.
Jared DeMerchant collected two goals and one assist to lead the Panthers to victory over the Senateurs.
Kyle Patterson also fired a pair for the victors, while Nick Cass and Jordan Hutton each chipped in with a goal and two assists.
Darrold Comeau twined the remaining Western Valley marker, to go with a pair of helpers apiece from Brandon Parsons and Mackenzie Brown and a solo set-up from Brydon Denny.
In Sunday's setback to the Lightning, Parsons and Brown each notched singles for the Panthers, while Hutton contributed one assist.
CCGHL squads in play
Several games are slated to hit the ice this week in 2008-09 Carleton County Gentlemen's Hockey League play.
Tuesday, Dec. 2: Connell Chrysler Chargers vs. NBBI, 9:30 p.m., Hartland; Wednesday, Dec. 3: Kubota vs. Atlantic Cat, Woodstock, 9 p.m., WKL River Rats vs. Connell Chysler Chargers, 10:15 p.m., Woodstock; Thursday, Dec. 4: Green Diamond John Deere vs. NBBI, 10 p.m., Woodstock; Friday, Dec. 5 Hartland Golf Club Sabres vs. Florenceville McCain Stars, 9:15 p.m., Florenceville-Bristol.

JV teams from CNHS to take on Maine
Junior varsity basketball squads from Carleton North High School will take on their counterparts from Presque Isle High School in Maine on Wednesday, Dec. 3 in a pair of exhibition contests. The girls game will go at 6 p.m., while the boys contest will go at 8 p.m.
In varsity AA play, Hartland High School will be back at home tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 2) for a pair of games against squads from Southern Victoria. The girls will take the court at 6 p.m., with the boys game to follow at 8 p.m.
